Customising Flexible Instruction Processors: A Tutorial Introduction
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents a tutorial about the Flexible Instruction Processor (FIP) methodology which facilitates trade-offs between area, performance and functionality of instruction processor designs, both at compile time and at run time. We explore the customisation of FIPs and discuss the use of FIPs to target the design space between off-the-shelf instruction processor designs that provide flexible computation, and custom hardware designs that provide high performance. We demonstrate how customisation enables FIPs to perform competitively with current main-stream processors and also with dedicated hardware, in certain applications such as CaffineMark Benchmarks and AES encryption.

Run-Time Adaptive Flexible Instruction Processors
This paper explores run-time adaptation of Flexible Instruction Processors (FIPs), a method for parametrising descriptions and development of instruction processors. The run-time adaptability of a FIP system allows it to evolve to suit the requirements of the user, by requesting automatic refinement based on instruction usage patterns. The techniques and tools that we have developed include: (a...
متن کاملAutomatically Customising VLIW Architectures with Coarse Grained Application-Specific Functional Units
Instruction Level Parallelism (ILP) machines, such as Very Long Instruction Word (VLIW) architectures, and customised architectures are two paradigms that are used to increase the performance of processors. While a VLIW machine has multiple functional units, a customised processor is equipped with Application-specific Functional Units (AFUs). Customisation has been proved beneficial on single i...
متن کاملCRISP: A Template for Reconfigurable Instruction Set Processors
A template for reconfigurable instruction set processors is described. This template defines a design space that enables the exploration of processors potentially suitable for flexible, power and cost efficient implementations of embedded multimedia applications, such as video compression in a hand held device. The template is based on a VLIW processor with a reconfigurable instruction set. In ...
متن کاملElicitation, Recast, and Meta-Linguistic Feedback in Form-Focused Exchanges: Effects of Feedback Modality on Multimedia Grammar Instruction
This research explores the effects of three computer-mediated feedback modalities, that is, elicitation, recast, and meta-linguistics, on the learning of English participial, gerund, and infinitival phrases among Iranian intermediate-level EFL learners. The overriding focus of the present study was to investigate whether different types of feedback given through form-focused computer-human exch...
متن کاملLow-Power DSP’s for Wireless Communications
Wireless communications and more specifically, the fast growing penetration of cellular phones and cellular infrastructure are the major drivers for the development of new programmable Digital Signal Processors (DSP’s). In this tutorial, an overview will be given of recent developments in DSP processor architectures, that makes them well suited to execute computationally intensive algorithms ty...
